    Record whether every channel breaks up or only one broadcaster's group of channels. Also note the time, weather and whether the picture returns by itself. This pattern is more useful than a general report that the television is not working.

  3. Restart the TV and check the selected input

    If one television pixelates while another remains clear, the issue may be local to that TV, its fly lead or its outlet. If several televisions fail at the same time, the shared cabling, splitter, amplifier, antenna or incoming signal becomes more likely.

  6. Retune only after basic checks

    A channel scan can help after a broadcaster change or when channels are missing. It does not repair a weak or unstable signal. Repeated retuning during an active reception fault can remove channels that were previously stored, so first note the current channel pattern and check outage information.

  7. Notice nearby electrical interference

    Observe whether the breakup starts when a particular appliance, light, charger or other device operates. ACMA notes that household equipment can affect reception. Switch only ordinary plug-in devices that are safe for you to operate, and leave fixed electrical work to the appropriate licensed trade.

  8. Record recent wind, rain or building changes

Why adding a booster can make reception worse

A signal amplifier is useful only when the signal path and levels justify it. ACMA cautions that a booster can overload a television receiver and make reception worse. It can also amplify unwanted interference along with the wanted broadcast signal.

If the existing system already includes an amplifier, note where its accessible power supply is located and whether its indicator is on. Do not buy another booster as the first response to pixelation.
