Practical answers

Frequently asked questions about Internet, Wi-Fi & NBN.

These answers use current Australian and Queensland official guidance. Property details still need to be checked before scope is confirmed.

Can an nbn connection box or supplied equipment be moved?

The answer depends on the nbn technology and whether the equipment is internal or external. nbn says some internal fixed-line equipment may be altered by a registered cabler under its Authority to Alter, while external equipment and satellite or Fixed Wireless equipment follow nbn relocation processes. Provider accounts, activation and network faults remain with the relevant provider.

Do slow rooms always mean the Wi-Fi router needs replacing?

No. ACMA lists router position, thick walls, other devices, interference, cabling and the router itself among the possible causes of slow or uneven Wi-Fi. Comparing a wired test, a test near the router and tests in the affected rooms helps separate the provider connection from in-property coverage before mesh equipment or cabling is selected.

Who can install fixed data cabling or extra network sockets?

ACMA says communications cabling must be performed by a registered cabler, or by an unregistered worker under the direct supervision of a registered cabler. The cabler needs the registration category and specialised competencies that match the proposed work, and must provide the customer with a written statement certifying that the work complies with the Wiring Rules. This cabling scope is separate from provider accounts, activation and network faults.
